Target

We hold a basic statistics seminar once a year for people who have questions about statistics used in sensory evaluations or who feel that they lack understanding of the basic aspects of statistics.

Content

This seminar will be based on “Chapter 4: Basic Statistical Methods” from “Must-Read Textbook for Certified Sensory Evaluation Specialists” edited by the Japanese Society for Sensory Evaluation, Kasumi Publishing Co., Ltd. (Written in Japanese)

Furthermore, the lecture will avoid using difficult formulas as much as possible, and will use diagrams to explain procedures as much as possible, with participants checking the procedures using Excel.

Program

The programs include: 

  1. Frequency distribution tables and graphs,
  2. Standard deviation and standard error,
  3. Properties of distributions such as normal distribution and t-distribution,
  4. Hypothesis testing,
  5. Analysis of variance,
  6. Multiple comparisons,
  7. Correlation coefficient,
  8. Tests using binomial distribution,
  9. Tests using chi-square distribution,
  10. Tests using rank correlation coefficient and rank method, and
  11. Explanations of tests using non-parametric methods.
